![]() ![]() ![]() This morning, level was half way between Max and Min. 2 weeks ago I noticed the coolant in the overflow tank was pretty low (coolant in rad was full) so I filled it up to Max. Have a 1 year old 2020 Subaru Outback (purchased new in 2021) with 25k on the odometer. The coolant should then only reach the MAX level when the radiator is very hot, which only happens on hot summer days in stop and go traffic, and when airflow is insufficient to cool the radiator. The tank should be labelled MIN at that point. The proper level is normally just an inch of coolant in the bottom of the tank when the radiator is stone COLD. When the radiator cooled, it once again sucked the liquid from the reservoir, resulting in a lower level in the reservoir.Īfter a few driving cycles, the reservoir will reach the proper level. When you filled the reservoir to the max, the overflow from the radiator, then caused the reservoir to overflow onto the road. This process results in a radiator that is always full. When the radiator cools, the coolant contracts, which creates suction, and pulls the coolant from the reservoir back into the radiator. The reservoir holds the excess coolant while the engine is hot. The overflow runs through the tube, and into the reservoir tank. You should notice a rubber tube just below the cap. As it expands, it builds up pressure, until it eventually pops up the radiator pressure release cap. As the coolant in the radiator heats up it expands. ![]()
